Does this sound familiar? You are remodeling your apartment, one room after another and at some point – just when you are almost finished – you lose motivation. We had all of our rooms made functional, pretty and cosy but then got stuck in a way with our daughters kids room. Happily our summer holidays in France brought a lot of inspiration for home decor and we finally started to remodel her childrens room.
First of all we painted the floors just like we had done it before in all of the other rooms. Afterwards we decided to create a two toned wall as we had lots of semi-full paint pots from our previous renovations. It`s perfect for using leftover paint, plus: We had just admired lots of these walls in France and were keen on trying it ourselves. We used a mid grey tone from Farrow&Ball (Purbeck Stone) for the lower part and white lime paint for the upper part of the wall. We really love the result as the walls look a lot higher now and the room on total got a larger and lighter appearance.
If you`d like to create a two toned wall make sure that you divide the wall at a third rather than right in the middle. Also check on the hight of your light switches. They should be above or underneath the line.
I always paint the baseboards in the same color as the walls – I just like this look. But I do not want to buy special varnish in each color all the time (very expensive and I only need a little bit of it, therefore more semi filled paint pots …) This is why I just buy transparent matt varnish, mix it with the wall paint stirr it really well and then just apply it on to the baseboards. The outcome is really good and less glossy than it would be with regular varnish – I really love that!
Chosing furniture was easy: the cabinet had already been in her room before. I found it at my in-laws garage some years ago and just painted it white. I still love it and it fits in perfectly. Her clothes are in the segment above, toys in the one below. We also already had the wooden table, bookshelf and little chairs. The only piece of furniture we needed to renew was the bed as she became too tall for the little nursery bed.
Our little daughter wished for lots of rosé color in her room – her favorite would have been pink walls. But we do believe that this won`t be her color of choice any longer soon and therefore just went for some pink decoration details. The new bed by flexa for example has got dusky pink legs that we could just paint in a few years if she changes her preferences. We didn’t use the side elements and it looks like a daybed now which I think will still be great for a schoolgirl or teenager!
For an additional touch of blush pink I was so happy to come across the really lush but maidenly bedlinen of Maison Margaret?* It is french as well and made of most wonderful fabrics. I am so happy Anne-Claire, the founder of this fabulous brand, sent over some of these beautiful textiles. They surely are a most wonderful addition to our daughters room.
For the storage of the wooden bricks we bought a lovely vintage drawer at the flea market and installed little wheels from a home improvement store underneath. It`s super good as the bricks can get quite heavy and baskets would break after a little while, plastic boxes was something we didn`t want to have in her kidsroom. Also my daughter and all her friends love that they can transport these heavy stones anywhere they want to by themselves – we don`t have to carry it for them anymore.

And here`s a cute little DIY to finish this post: We always make weaving frames out of parcel boxes as you can see on the images below. It`s working just as good as the wooden ones you can buy and this way you don`t have another thing you need to store somewhere in your little ones room – there is always a storage problem, isn`t it?!
*These products were a gift and we love each single one of them!
Hallo Anna,
